Denotation and connotation
The child in apparent poverty's facial expressions suggest feelings that aren't content with his current living conditions. The poorly constructed hut in the background shows that resources and necessities aren't in reach, which makes life much harder. The deeper meanings in the advert are shown by the text "Dig toilets Not graves". This means that children in this area don't have toilets, and as a result of this graves are being dug for them due to low life expectancy. This communicates to the audience to donate money to the youth in places like Africa with no money to survive. Also, the fact that the advert is funded by WaterAid shows that these children need more water, as they don't have running water in their homes. An audience might react shocked or in pity after seeing the advert because we take what we have for granted, meanwhile children are suffering.
The small car symbolises the fact that you don't need expensive and socially impressive things to survive. This advert links to the idea that everyone has unlimited needs however there are limited resources in the world. This communicates to the audience that the car gets the job done and saves your money which you can use on different things whilst still keeping you happy. The audience might react as if the car isn't an ideal buy, however the text (written/verbal media) suggests otherwise - "Happiness is 'car' shaped", and "You don't need a big one to be happy", showcasing the obvious doubts a buyer may have when considering what car to buy.
